Children With Special Needs
Who are Children with Special Needs?

Children with Special Needs are children with complex medical needs that involve multiple systems of the body.  They usually:
· Follow up with sub-specialists in tertiary centres
· Require specialized medications
· Are at risk of developmental delays
· Require periodic admissions to hospital for specialized treatment
· Are involved with Children's Treatment Centres
· Are involved with other community services
· Qualify for  Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities and Special Services at Home Programs and other community services and programs.
Examples of Children with Special Needs
· Complex congenital heart disease
· Down Syndrome
· Developmental Delays where multiple systems of the body are involved
· Seizures if other systems involved (i.e. developmental delays)

What do we do for our Children with Special Needs?

· Shared Care:
Children with special needs continue ongoing primary care with their family doctor.  We monitor and coordinate care for medical issues which require specialized training, or additional time not available to most family physicians.

· Three to Six Month Follow-up:
Usually we see children with special needs every six months in follow-up to review developmental progress and monitor complex medical needs.
