These are the days to spend time with the people you love and make festive memories to be cherished for years to come. Our offices will be closed for two weeks (December 21st to January 5th) to celebrate the holidays. We’ll be back in action in January. We hope you all enjoy a safe, happy and healthy festive season!
We’re coming into the holidays but that doesn’t mean things have slowed down here at Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Every season seems to have its hallmark ailments and winter is no exception. Here’s what we’ve been seeing a lot of over the past couple of months here at the QPAM offices: In babies: Jaundice Jaundice is fairly common in newborns. One of the most noticeable symptoms is a yellow-ish tinge to the skin and areas like the whites of the eyes, which is caused by a build up of something called bilirubin in the blood. A baby with jaundice[Read more...]
January will mark the first full year of us using the secure messaging system, Wellx to stay in touch with our patient families! For the past year we’ve been using Wellx to answer questions, send results, book follow-up and just stay in touch. Now you can sign up to join us on Wellx directly from our website! Just submit your name and email address using our simple online form and you’ll receive[Read more...]
Your brain: It’s super sensitive and super important. If you sustain any kind of hit to your head, you could end up with a concussion. Sometimes a concussion and its symptoms can go away in a week or two, and that’s great. But if you have an concussion and you push yourself too hard too fast you could be looking at more serious health issues down the line, and that’s definitely not great. Here at Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, we take sports injuries like concussions seriously. A concussion can happen easily but, if not treated properly, can have lasting[Read more...]

When it comes to the ongoing healthcare of a child with special needs, your pediatrician should be a trusted adviser for you and your family. This past Sunday, Dr. Dempsey had the chance to talk about the role of a pediatrician in the care of a special needs child on The Coffee Klatch Special Needs Blog Radio Show. Featuring renowned guests speaking about a variety of topics and issues of interest of parents of kids and teens with special needs, The Coffee Klatch is a pretty incredible (and easily accessible) resource. From their website: We take pride in providing interviews[Read more...]
For the last couple of years, we’ve been using the Internet to bring you closer; closer to us, closer to relevant resources and closer to each other. From Facebook to Twitter to our secure messaging portal, Wellx, we’re always looking for new ways to take things to the next level. We’re ready to take on some new challenges, and we want you to be a part of it! For the next four days we’re inviting every single one of you to participate in our first ever QPAM Online Think Tank Weekend. Here’s how it works: We’ve set up a Facebook[Read more...]
Last month Dr. Dempsey and Sara took the stage at Queen’s University’s Pediatric Grand Rounds to talk about QPAM’s work with social media. Aside from just being a really great opportunity to showcase the online Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine community, it was also a great chance to hopefully inspire a whole host of other current and future children’s health care providers and show them how amazing social media in health care can be. In order to provide both the provider and patient perspective, we reached out to our community and asked people to share their thoughts about, and experiences with using[Read more...]
The following is a guest post from community manager and HCSMCA founder, Colleen Young. Anyone who follows me on Twitter (@colleen_young and @hcsmca) knows that I’m a big fan of Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Paul Dempsey and Sara Hamil, and how they use social media. They got started for all the right reasons like “taking down the walls of their practice”, building community amongst their patient families, sharing credible and useful resources and connecting with other healthcare professionals. But what struck me most 2 years ago when we first crossed paths on Twitter is that Quinte Pediatrics shows they[Read more...]
Cough, sneeze, wheeze… If that’s still the story in your home, you’re not alone. It feels like respiratory sickness is hanging around longer than usual for this time of the year, and I’m definitely hearing parents ready to say “Uncle” to this season of bronchiolitis and goo. So I spent a few minutes yesterday evening between patients in the ER and jumped onto Public Health Agency of Canada’s FluWatch website. Here’s the first bit of not-so-good news: This is the map of the Windsor-Montreal Corridor. The violet coloured zones represent areas of sporadic influenza activity, and the blue zones are[Read more...]
